Abelam Yam Mask-Syd Rosen Collection New Guinea Art
This beautiful Abelam cane yam headdress has been hidden away in a storage facility in Phoenix for almost 50 years. Acquired by Morris Young in the early 1970s this one has nice remains of red, yellow and white pigments on the elegant leaf-shaped form. What is most striking however is the small yellow yam mask popping out in high relief from the front. It is a great one. The headdress dates to the early/mid 20th century, is 21” (53.5 cm) in height.
