Malekula Spear Tip-Melanesian Art-Oceanic Art
Most are probably familiar with the deeply recessed and highly stylized heads from Malekula spears. They are great pieces of art but the present one is equally as cool but of a totally different aesthetic. Coming from eastern Malekula this set of janus heads are simplified and powerful with soft green and red pigments applied to opposing quadrants. The piece comes from the Richard Kelton Collection, dates to the early 20th century or before and stands 14” (35.5 cm) in height (with the heads about 4” tall).
