Massim Wave Splitter Finial-Jolika Collection-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
This old and fine Massim canoe wave splitter attachment was collected by Harry Beran in 1987 from Wabubuna village, Woodlark Island. The elegant and distinct style was used on a turtle fishing canoe of the type called “Eilog” and is considered very rare. The piece is illustrated in my 2013 book “Collecting New Guinea Art: Douglas Newton, Harry Beran, Thomas Schultze-Westrum” on pages 88/9. The finial dates to the early/mid 20th century, is 16 ½” (42 cm) in height, is ex. Jolika Collection of John and Marcia Friede.
