Large Karawari River wooden war trumpet, Karawari River area, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, Philip Goldman Collection, London, Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, Marc Assayag, Montreal, late 19th/early 20th century, 32 1/8” (81.6 cm) in height. Wooden trumpets were often carried into battle in the Sepik region so that in the event of a successful outcome they could be blown on the way back to alert the home village of the number of enemies slain. This one is quite large with a beautiful, stylized face on top.
