Murik Lakes Brag Mask-Louis Pierre Ledoux-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
This is an excellent and early Murik Lakes mask collected by the American ethnographer Louis Pierre Ledoux in 1936. What strikes me most about this piece are the remains of bold colors that hint at the vibrancy of the spiritual presence when this mask was originally danced. It dates to the late 19th/early 20th century, is 18 1/8” (46 cm) in height and is published in my most recent Parcours des Mondes catalog Three Collections of Oceanic Art, no. 28, pages 78/79.
