New Ireland Kulap Figure-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
A very old and important New Ireland kulap chalk figure with an impressive provenance. It was initially in the Ernst Heinrich Collection and can be seen in the color photograph of his house in Bad Cannstatt in the 1950s. From there it was sold at Parke-Bernet New York auction of 21 October 1967, lot 48. It was purchased by the Parisian dealer Charles Ratton and subsequently passed on to his wife Madeleine Meunier. It is illustrated in the Christie’s/Millon sale in Paris on 15 December 2016, lot 6. It dates to the late 19th century, stands 7 7/8” (19.9 cm) in height.
