New Ireland Hornbill Mouth Ornament-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
Here is a fine New Ireland hornbill ornament called a “Vatlam” held in the mouth and used in dances related to Malagan ceremonies. This one is exceptional for the openwork around the eye and the bold blue pigments. Ex. Gallerie Miller, Frankfurt, ex. Private Collection Frankfurt, 2001, Sotheby's Paris, 9 March 2022, lot 35. Dates to the late 19th/early 20th century, is 16” (40.8 cm) in length.
