Yangoru Boiken Clay Spirit Figure-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
Here is an important Yangoru Boiken clay ancestral spirit figure. It is of great antiquity and the only clay spirit figure I have come across from the Boiken culture. An important detail is the hole in the figure’s right leg that was probably used as a local repair at some point to reattach the broken limb. The piece has an engaging wide-eyed expression, splayed form with outstretched arms and legs, pierced nose and ears with remains of red and white pigments. The piece dates to the 19th century, is 8 3/8” (21.3 cm) in height.
