Collingwood Bay Lime Spatula With Shell Attachments-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
Even though I published a catalog on the art of Collingwood Bay back in 2009 very few people are aware of this material. The lime spatulas in particular are rare and interesting works of art. They were owned by chiefs and passed down from father to son. The designs are often fields of chevrons or dentate motifs—such as on this example. The present spatula is unusual for its nice remaining bead and shell attachments. Dating to the late 19th century the spatula is 14” (36 cm) in height.
