Old Lake Sentani Wood Plate-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Tribal Art
I recently acquired this ancient Lake Sentani wooden plate from the son of the American army officer Woodruff Bryne who served in New Guinea in 1943/44. The dish is carved all over with the classic interconnected curvilinear design. The patina is dark and aged with worn glossy highlights from generations of traditional use. It is one of the best examples I have had by the quality of design, age and patina. It dates to the early 20th century and is 18 ½” (47 cm) in length.
