Mountain Arapesh Wooden Bowl-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
I originally field collected this rare Mountain Arapesh bowl over 20 years ago in the coastal mountains west of Wewak heading towards Aitape. It has the classic highly stylized Janus heads on one end—with a pointed top, sharp horizontal brow and long thin nose ending in twin-loop nostrils. The bowl itself is deep and an elegant oval form. There is a knob at the base. The overall patina is dark brown and well used. The piece dates to the early 20th century, is 22 ½” (62.1 cm) in height, is ex. Kirby Kallas Lewis and ex. Elizabeth Pryce Collection.
